Product information "Château Laforge Emilion Grand Cru 2017"
CHATEAU LAFORGE is our most senior Château or blended wine. It is made in the style of our Single Vineyard wines – including the cropping levels. It also represents our wine with the largest amount of Merlot – as Andrew Jefford, the writer, stated – “Maltus’s Merlot babe”!
Viticulture
The vines are cropped low – around 30 hectolitres a hectare – four bunches to the vine (less than half the volume authorised by the Appellation), ensuring concentration. The soil/terroir is the three types that exist in Saint Emilion – sand, gravel, and clay over limestone. The vines that make up the gravel contribution are usually the first we pick each year – the gravel acting like a night-storage heater. The vines are pruned on the double guyot system. The secondary shoots are removed and two runs of green harvesting completed in order to achieve no more than four bunches of grapes per vine, about thirty hectolitres per hectare. The grapes are handpicked into small trays before transfer to the winery.
Vinification
On arrival at the winery the grapes are sorted – firstly by bunch and then, after destemming, grape by grape. Only conveyors are used to transport the grapes and the wine is fermented in wooden vats after extreme cold maceration. The wines undergo malolactic fermentation in new French oak, and are barrel-aged in an air-conditioned cellar at 18 °C.
Grapes
92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc
Tasting Notes
“A beautifully fresh nose, with dark perfumed black cherry and plum, sprinkled with chalk dust and cocoa bean notes on the nose, but it feels fresh and bright. A solid, broad, confident palate, a crisp shell of black plum, with spiced praline and pepper, backed up with velvety tannins and a fine grip, and plenty of acid freshness and energy. A tangible, chalky substance here. This is a tip-top Laforge with a fine length. The élevage will be in 80% new oak.” 93-95 PTS, THE WINE DOCTOR – CHRIS KISSACK
